Agricultural manure is a primary cause of our nation’s water quality and soil nutrient loading concerns. For example, there are roughly the same number of laying hens and people in the U.S. Each million laying hens excretes 100 tons of waste per day. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), animal feeding operations generate about 500 million tons of manure each year. Much of this manure runs off into surface water and groundwater, contaminating them with many species of bacteria, pathogens, toxic metals and veterinary drugs. Nutrients such as nitrates which cause algal blooms, as well as oxygen-demanding organics, remove oxygen from the water and kill fish and other beneficial aquatic life. BioStar’s manure anaerobic digestion technology offers a responsible way to manage this animal manure.
At BioStar waste-to-energy facilities, manure is not land applied, but converted to renewable energy and chicken manure organic fertilizers, preventing agricultural runoff through manure anaerobic digestion. The waste stream and wastewater is substantially reduced. Our unique high temperature anaerobic digestion process also eliminates virtually all of the bacteria and pathogens in manure, so the resulting fertilizer is safe. It can be applied to fields and gardens without polluting our waterways, soil or food!
